Pierson junior Johnny Chisholm drew a first-inning walk, stole second base and came home to score the only run of the game Friday afternoon at Dowling College, where the Pierson-Bridgehampton baseball team knocked off Friends Academy, 1-0, in a New York State Southeast Regional Semifinal, which doubled as the Long Island Championship.

McGowin Promoted to Double-A

Kyle McGowin is climbing up the baseball ladder, and is doing so rather quickly.

The Sag Harbor native and right hander out of Savannah State University was called up last month to pitch for the Arkansas Travelers, the Double A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. One year removed from being selected in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft, McGowin, 22, has traveled from the rookie league, to Single A and now Double A, where top prospects often jump directly to the Major League level.

Layoff Ends for Pierson and the Serious Business Begins

Posted on 05 June 2014

At long last, games will be played.

The Pierson-Bridgehampton baseball and softball teams have been slogging through a month-long layoff since the regular seasons ended in early May. The teams were crowned champions of Suffolk County without playing a single game, mostly because their competition this season was unworthy in the eyes of Section XI, which governs the county’s high school sports.

Nearly three weeks into a long break between the end of the regular season and the start of the New York State Class C playoffs, the Pierson softball team is doing what it does best.

“We’re working hard,” said Sam Duchemin, the team’s ace junior pitcher. “Personally, the layoff doesn’t hurt me. I feel so much stronger. I feel like it’s not such a struggle because I’m not pitching every day.”

Baseball Runs in the Kruel Family Blood

Posted on 21 May 2014

Dylan Kruel, 12, announced one evening at dinner that he was breaking an important family tradition.

“He said ‘I have an announcement to make,’” Dylan’s mother, Sandi, said. “He said ‘I will not be playing baseball. I am going to go to school to be an actor and an artist.’”

The announcement was shocking only because Dylan’s older brothers, Brandon and Nick, have baseball in their blood and because their mother, a former coach, knows—and loves—the game better than most, serving as the co-general manager of the Sag Harbor Whalers of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League.

The Sag Harbor Whalers of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League (HCBL) put together their best regular season to date in 2013, winning the regular-season title before falling to Center Moriches in the semifinal round of the postseason.

Center Moriches, which went on to lose the title series to the North Fork Ospreys, has been disbanded for the coming season, replaced by the Montauk Mustangs, which now make the Whalers the second most eastern team in the league.

Seniors Honored as Whalers Look to Playoffs

Posted on 14 May 2014

There are some years in terms of senior class athletes where their graduations cause head scratching as to the future of the programs they represent.

This has been one of those years at Pierson High School, and while new players and new teams will continue to fight on into the future, the absence of this year’s seniors from the baseball and softball teams will be felt well into the 2015 school year.

Allura Leggard and Hannah Jungck, Pierson High School students who compete on the East Hampton girls track team, will have their names carved in the record books at least until next season after helping to set two new school relay records during a dual meet victory that gave the program its first winning season in 15 years.
