Lady Whalers Fall to Rival East Hampton

Pierson sophomore Ana Sherwood was on a goal scoring tear until she and her Lady Whalers teammates collided with cross-town rival East Hampton on Monday.

The Lady Bonackers shut out Pierson, 1-0, in Mashashimuet Park on Monday behind Francesca Keogh’s first-half goal. The Lady Whalers, who were led by seven goals from Sherwood in the first two games, both victories, failed to score for the first time this season.

The first win of a new season is always a satisfying accomplishment, especially when it comes against your most historic rival.

The East Hampton girls tennis team, which features a handful of players from Pierson and Bridgehampton, knocked off visiting Southampton, 5-2, on Monday to improve to 1-2 in League VII.

Lady Whalers Win to Start New Era

Nine months have passed since Kasey Gilbride knocked in an overtime goal in Syracuse to send the Pierson field hockey team home with a New York State Class C Championship. Six seniors have graduated since, but on Monday a new look Lady Whalers team emerged with an impressive result, a 5-1 road win over Greenport-Southold, to begin their 2014 season.

Surprise Result at Sag Harbor’s Mighty Hamptons Triathlon

Julian Acevedo was the first to cross the finish line at the Mighty Hamptons Triathlon, held at Long Beach in Sag Harbor on Sunday, raising his hands in triumph as he broke the tape with an impressive time of 2:05:03. What the second-year triathlete didn’t realize at the time, however, was that a seasoned veteran, 49 year-old Adrian Mackay of New York, would finish later with a time of 2:03:06 to win the event, which is broken into separate waves to prevent congestion during the swim portion of the event.

Pierson Soccer Rebuilds and Hopes To Regroup

The Pierson boys soccer team has returned to practice 10 months after an unsettling loss to Southold in the Suffolk County Class C Championship, with a new group of Whalers looking to erase the sour memory and instead build upon the program’s undefeated League VIII title from a season ago.

Babington Dries Off to Win Hampton Classic Grand Prix

Kevin Babington went from blue water to a blue ribbon in Bridgehampton on Sunday at the 39th Annual Hampton Classic, recovering from a wet and wild morning to claim victory in the $250,000 Grand Prix, the horse show’s signature event.

A Long Paddle from Montauk to Block Island for Charity

For the ninth time in 10 years a group of experienced stand-up paddlers and kayakers set out early Saturday morning on a journey from Montauk Point to Block Island. The 18-mile paddle was completed roughly six hours later, with 29 participants having raised more than $80,000 for the local non-profit Paddlers for Humanity, which works to improve the lives of children.

A Major Accomplishment for Poxabogue Pro

It was back to pitching and putting at the Poxabogue Golf Center Tuesday afternoon, teaching children how to hit driver and tracking the flights of his students’ iron shots. To the casual observer, it would be hard to tell that club pro Rob Corcoran had just come off the highlight of his golfing career.
