When the East End Drug Task Force last week busted a ring of heroin dealers in Riverhead officials say was trafficking in a particularly potent brand of the drug, it cast a light on the growing problem of opiate addiction across Suffolk County, including the East End.

Southampton Town Board Says Yes to Political Limits but No to Fleming’s Committee Member Ban

The Southampton Town Board on Tuesday unanimously adopted an amendment to its ethics code that seeks to balance the number of political party members who can serve at any one time on the planning, zoning or conservation boards.

The proposal, introduced by Councilwoman Christine Scalera and Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst, just two weeks ago, with the backing of Councilmen Brad Bender and Stan Glinka, replaced a measure long championed by Councilwoman Bridget Fleming that sought to ban members of political party committees from serving on the town’s land-use boards.

Oddone Avoids More Prison Time in Plea Deal

Anthony Oddone will not be going back to prison. In a plea deal arranged by his attorney and prosecutors from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, Mr. Oddone pleaded guilty on Thursday to a single charge of manslaughter in the first degree for the 2008 death of a bouncer at the Southampton Publick House.

Before Cuts, Sag Harbor Village Mulls 7 Percent Increase in Draft 2014-15 Budget

The Sag Harbor Village Board of Trustees received a draft budget for 2014-15 at its first budget work session on February 19, with department heads requesting an overall 7-percent spending increase over last year. On Tuesday, Mayor Brian Gilbride said he would like to see the spending increase reduced to less than 1.48 percent before the budget is adopted in order to ensure it falls below a state-mandated 2-percent property tax levy cap.

Back by Popular Demand, the Jackson Pollock Studio Croc

After selling out shortly following their introduction last summer, the Jackson Pollock Studio Croc is back at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in Springs. The shoes’ design is derived from a photo taken of Mr. Pollock’s studio floor during the “drip period” between 1947 and 1950, when he created his most famous abstract expressionist paintings. Along with wife Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock painted in his local studio up until his death in Springs in August 1956.

The Roaring ’20s are Back at Suffolk Theater Anniversary Gala

Celebrating its anniversary, the Suffolk Theater hosts a ‘20s dance party, asking guests to “take a step back in time to celebrate the evolution of jazz” with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. Grab your flapper dresses and bowler hats; the theater encourages guests to “dress in your ‘20s best” for the gala, starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1.
