If you’re a Pierson sports fan, Friday night’s boys’ basketball match-up against the Bridgehampton Killer Bees will be the game to see.
The Whalers — coming off a recent win against Southold, as well as a 20-point victory over Bridgehampton in their last face-off — are sure to hit the ground running. And you can bet the Killer Bees will stop at nothing to prevent their legendary basketball status from getting even more sullied the second time around.
And while we’re eager to see this lively cross-town rivalry take center court in the Pierson gym, we’re just as excited by the energy that’ll be rising up from the sidelines.
For the first time ever, the newly formed Sag Harbor Booster Foundation (SHBF) will host a series of spirited events and half-time performances during Friday night’s basketball game, all in an effort to inject the Sag Harbor community with a major dose of school pride.
In addition to selling T-shirts, sweatshirts and water bottles all emblazoned with words “Pierson Athletics,” the booster foundation will sell refreshments and soft drinks, further bolstering the sporty, energetic aura typical of most adrenaline-rich sports matches. We’re excited to see this facet of the school district working hard to get this community on its feet and at more games.
Because, really, it’s not just about sports.
The booster foundation, at its core, is a fundraising organization that exists to support all extracurricular programs within the Sag Harbor School District. For this reason, the half-time show will feature the high school choir, the high school orchestra and a demonstration from the Pierson robotics team.
We’re happy to see some effort at unification combining all school activities, as well as both schools. Ultimately, the Booster Foundation hopes to bridge the divide between the elementary, middle and high schools by giving the entire student population something to celebrate.
This inaugural event for the booster foundation will ultimately kick-off its events for the rest of the year—including it’s much larger Quiz Bowl fundraiser on Saturday, February 11 (the same night as HarborFrost).
We encourage you to join the crowd at Friday night’s game. Do it for the Whalers. Do it for the school. Or — here’s one — do it because you just want to have fun.
