Former Sag Harbor Village police officer David Driscoll has taken a position with the Amityville Police Department, according to Sag Harbor Village Police Chief Thomas Fabiano.
Officer Driscoll was let go as the last hire to the Sag Harbor Village Police Department force in the village’s 2013-2014 budget, leaving the department with 10 officers and the chief.
During Tuesday night’s Sag Harbor Village Board meeting, Chief Fabiano asked the board for approval to hire part time help to contend with the summer season schedule. He added he feels restricted in the amount of overtime he is allowed to dispense throughout the existing department members. Mayor Gilbride has asked the chief to contact him, he said, when overtime hours are required.
“My fear is the one-man shifts is a dangerous situation that will keep on happening,” said Chief Fabiano, adding the overtime restriction makes it difficult for officers to complete their jobs. If out on an aided case, for example, Fabiano said he shouldn’t have to call the mayor if an officer needs to stay a half hour over their shift to complete the run. Chief Fabiano added he feels uncomfortable talking with the mayor, concerned he will be accused of insubordination if he appears disrespectful.
The board, including Mayor Gilbride, agreed Chief Fabiano could hire a part time officer at $23 an hour. Trustee Ken O’Donnell congratulated Chief Fabiano on the 36 years of service he has given to the village as a member of the police department.
