Just 15 years ago when the 631 area code was introduced to Suffolk County, replacing 516, which used to serve both Suffolk and Nassau counties, it seemed there would be more than enough telephone numbers to go around. But with the explosion in the use of cellphones and other telecommunications, it appears that will not be the case.
To rectify the situation, the New York State Public Service Commission is held a hearing on Tuesday, July 15, at the Suffolk County Center in Riverside to hear public comment on a plan to add another area code.
The new area code, which is expected to go into effect as early as 2016, has yet to be chosen. Either the county will be divided, with one part getting the new area code and the other keeping 516, or the two will exist side by side with more recent customers getting the new area code.
