DISH: Green Juice to Spice up the New Year

Posted on 31 December 2012

The holiday season brings much joy and laughter -— and also a lot of heavy foods and for some, libations. The result is many of this week’s revelers will enter the new year with an urge to turn over a new leaf, increase physical exercise, tackle those crossword puzzles and eat right.

Virtually every study on the health benefits of nutrition point to one pure, excellent source of digestive wellness — fresh, raw vegetables. In Sag Harbor, one of the meccas to health and wellness as it relates to our stomachs is Provisions Natural Foods Market & Organic Café. The café carries a line of freshly squeezed juices and smoothies, including Green Juice, a mix of celery, cucumber, parsley, kale and chard, which can be boosted with the addition of fresh lemon, apple and ginger.

According to Hadley Vogel, who works in the café, the live enzymes found in the fresh-juiced vegetables are an excellent way to improve digestion.

“Ginger, in general, is very good for you because it contains anti-inflammatory properties,” she said, adding it will also relieve digestive problems like nausea making it not only ideal as a part of one’s regular diet, but also for someone looking for a healthful boost after a night of over indulgence.

“Green vegetables are also packed with chlorophyll, which is very good for the body,” said Vogel. “This is a very hydrating beverage.”

Plus, she added, each order is juiced on the spot, meaning Green Juice is fresh, and therefore, better for your body.
