For Michael Gluckman, one of the new owners of Madison & Main – a seafood-centric, bistro restaurant set to debut next month in the former New Paradise Café space on Main Street – paying homage to the building’s history while celebrating Sag Harbor as it is today was critical in helping shape the philosophy behind his newest restaurant.
Sitting at the reconstructed bar at the front of Madison & Main on Saturday morning, Gluckman said he hopes architectural changes to the restaurant, coupled with its focus on locally-sourced seafood and steakhouse fare will create a warm, comfortable, family friendly environment that will compliment Sag Harbor’s already bustling restaurant scene.
Gluckman said having a partner in executive chef and co-owner Eric Miller, proprietor of Food & Co. and Miller’s BBQ in East Hampton, ensures extra care will be paid to the place where it matters most—the kitchen.
Gluckman and Miller signed onto the space after the New Paradise Café opted to not renew its lease among reports of a rent increase. On Saturday, Gluckman said Madison & Main has a long-term lease and a fair price.
“I am always looking around for a good lease,” he said. “And this is a great village—I live here, my kids go to school here, so it is already home.”
Gluckman immediately knew he wanted to change the interior design of the space, opting to move the bar from the middle of the restaurant to the front. He also has constructed French doors at the front of the building, which will open onto Main Street in season.
“It’s a friendlier space, I think – it really opens the rest of the restaurant up and lets a lot of light into the building,” he said.
The original brick of the building has been exposed, and Gluckman is reconstructing an outdoor patio space at the rear of the building.
Madison & Main will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and will offer brunch on both Saturday and Sunday. In addition
grill steaks, a seasonal selection of fish, lobsters, Montauk tuna, local fluke, organic chicken and roasted and braised Long Island duck.
“With Eric, I have always liked him and knew he would be good at this, and having a chef that is a part owner gives us a lot more control over our quality of food,” said Gluckman. “This is a chef who really cares.”
Madison & Main is located at 126 Main Street in Sag Harbor and is expected to open seven days a week, for lunch and dinner, in early April. For more information, or to make a reservation, call 725-6246.
