Claire York, age 79, died on November 11 at Southampton Hospital after a prolonged illness. Most recently a resident of Ocean Avenue in East Hampton, Mrs. York had also lived in Sag Harbor and New York City.
Born in New York City on April 18, 1932 to David and Ella Fisher (deceased), Mrs. York attended Hunter University High School and New York University where she met her husband, Dr. Alan York. She then attended Southampton College/LIU where she was the first student enrolled and the first to receive Summa Cum Laude honors. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Southampton College in 1968.
From 1949 to 1952 Mrs. York was a fashion model. While she attended college she was a remedial reading teacher at the Mattituck Public Schools. She taught at Sag Harbor Elementary School from 1968 until she retired in 1988.
During the 1960s Mrs. York served as President of the Hampton’s Chapter of Hadassah. She was one of the first founding members of The Jewish Center of the Hamptons, serving as the first female Executive Officer in 1966. She later was a religious school teacher at both Temple Adas Israel, Sag Harbor and the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, East Hampton. She was also a member of the Friends of Guild Hall, East Hampton, the League of Women Voters, Lions Club Women’s Auxillary and Rotary Club Women’s Auxillary.
Mrs. York is survived by her husband, Alan, of East Hampton and her children Dr. Steven York of Sherman, Calif. and Barbara York of East Hampton and her grandson Daniel York.
A service was held November 13 at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons with Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman and Cantor Debra Stein officiating. Interment followed at the Independent Jewish Cemetery in Sag Harbor.
