Former Sag Harbor resident Frank Everett Bennett passed away at his retirement community of Crystal Pointe near Dunnellon, Fla. on January 16, 2012.
Born in Sag Harbor in June 1935, he was the only son of Louis and Hilda Loper Bennett. He attended local schools, graduating from Pierson High School in 1953. He began working at the Sag Harbor Express and joined the National Guard where he served for six years. In 1960 he married the former Barbara Stephens of Amagansett, took at job at the Hampton Press in Bridgehampton and moved into the family home on Madison Street which his father had built.
He joined the Sag Harbor Fire Department in 1970, holding several positions in the Montauk Hose Co. When failing eyesight made fighting fires more dangerous he took on the duties of Chief Dispatcher. His familiar cadence of “K double E 261” was a dinnertime occurrence for many years. He was extremely proud of the fact that he was chosen Fireman of the Year in 1972 and his son, Bill, received the same award 25 years later in 2007.
In retirement in Florida, he was a director of the Homeowners Association and also enjoyed playing pool each week in the Moose Lodge and weekend card games with friends.
Mr. Bennett is survived by Barbara, his wife of 51 years, daughter Karen Philips (Al), son Bill, daughter Amy Davis (Mike), grandchildren Rachel Sachtleben, Samantha Davis and Johnathan Davis, sister Betty Herman, nephew Don Herman and his tri-colored mini Cocker Spaniel Lucie.
