Richard P. O’Connell

Richard P. O’Connell of Sag Harbor died at Stony Brook University Hospital on Wednesday, August 27 at the age of 77.

Born in Southampton on April 9, 1931 he was the son of William and Anna (Anderson) O’Connell. Prior to his retirement, he was director of plant operations at Southampton Hospital.

Mr. O’Connell is survived by his wife, Judy (Scudner) Luszcz O’Connell and sons Jeffrey, Stephen and Daniel O’Connell, and step-children Jeff and Allyson Luszcz. He is also survived by brother William O’Connell of Sag Harbor and Venice, Fla.

He is also survived by grandchildren Ashley, Meredith, Meghan, Jacob and Zachariah, and niece Sharon Babula.

Mr. O’Connell, a graduate of Pierson High School, was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to 1953. He was a member of the Chelberg and Battle Post 388 of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5050.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 30, at St. Andrew Church. Remains were cremated.

The family asks that memorial donations be made to the John Jermain Memorial Library, Southampton Hospital or the American Cancer Society.


Peter J. Hill, Jr.

Peter J. Hill Jr., 87, a 38-year resident of Bridgehampton, died at Southampton Hospital on August 31, 2008.

Born in Dothan, Ala., on September 1, 1920, the son of Peter and Eldora Hill. He had also lived in Sag Harbor for 20 years before moving to Bridgehampton.

Mr. Hill was a manager with the New York City Housing Authority, working in race relations. He attended Albany State College in Georgia, and Queensboro College in Queens, N.Y. He also served with the U. S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife Gloria, and their children, Candice Hill, Deborah Hill and Peter Hill, all of Bridgehampton. He is also survived by sister Esther Ruth Williams of Detroit, Mich. He was predeceased by siblings Electra Burney and Howard Hill.

He is also survived by two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews.

Services were held on September 3 at the Bridgehampton Baptist Church.

    I would like a copy of an obit that may have appeared in your paper around April 9, 1959. It would be of Rev. William F. Rohm of Glover St., who pastored at Bethel Baptist Church on Madison and Henry Sts. which is now an art gallery. Any info you can provide will be helpful. I am doing my family’s genealogy search.

    I was told that my mother’s uncle was adopted by the Bertram family on Long Island. We want to know more information on Rev. William Rohm who was pastor of Bethel Baptist Church at Sag Harbor, NY
