The Pierson-Bridgehampton field hockey team lost to Southampton, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon and has now split the regular-season series with its local rival and likely future postseason opponent when the Suffolk County Class C playoffs begin next month. Playing on its home turf field–Pierson plays its home games on grass at Mashashimuet Park–the Lady Mariners dominated the action in the first half and took the lead on a goal by Keara Wood.

The Lady Whalers, who defeated Southampton, 1-0, at home on September 19, had plenty of chances as well, with a half dozen shots missing the goal by six inches or less. Southampton’s Emily Wesnofske iced the game late in the second half with a goal off a penalty shot. Pierson goalie Emma Romeo, who was under siege for much of the game, finished with 10 saves.

Next up for the Lady Whalers, who fell to 6-3 in Division III play and into fifth place just behind Southampton, are two home games against William Floyd the Saturday, October 13 at 9 a.m. and Shoreham-Wading River on October 15 at 4:30 p.m. The top six teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the playoffs.
