Body Washes Up on Amagansett Beach

Posted on 27 May 2010

The body of an unidentified male was discovered on the shores of Ocean Beach in Amagansett early Tuesday morning. According to East Hampton Town Police Detective Sgt. Chris Anderson, a passerby spotted the corpse shortly after 8 a.m. during a morning walk. A preliminary investigation conducted by town police revealed that the body was male and decomposition had begun.

“It was moderate decomposition, but not advanced,” Det. Sgt. Anderson reported on Tuesday.

The remains were sent to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office.

Det. Sgt. Anderson added that the body was found without identification but was clothed, though he declined to give the particulars on the man’s items of clothing at this time. While the body is analyzed by a forensic team, Det. Sgt. Anderson said East Hampton Town Police will cull the missing persons records from neighboring police agencies.

“He could have washed up from a lot of different places,” Det. Sgt. Anderson said, noting the difficulty in solving these types of cases. This isn’t the first time an anonymous body has washed up on an East Hampton Town Beach since he has been a member of the precinct.
