Posted on 24 July 2012

A motor vehicle accident on County Road 39 in Southampton snarled traffic for hours on Tuesday as police investigated the crash, which sent one driver to Stony Brook University Hospital via helicopter.

On Tuesday at 1:56 p.m. Southampton Town Police received a report of a motor vehicle accident near Inlet Road near the Lobster Grille Inn. The accident occurred between a 2012 Mercedes Benz and a 2004 Western Star truck. According to police the two vehicles collided, causing heavy damage to both and spewing debris across the roadway.

Southampton Volunteer Ambulance was dispatched to the scene as well as the Southampton Fire Department to extract a wounded male from the Mercedes Benz with the New York State Police, Suffolk County Department of Public Works and the Suffolk County Police Aviation Unit on the scene to assist. He was flown to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for unknown injuries. The driver’s condition was unknown as of press time. According to police, the driver of the truck refused medical attention at the scene.

According to police, a debris field of fluid from both vehicles covered all lanes of travel resulting in the closure of the road until close to 8 p.m. – one of the major arteries into the Hamptons, which resulted in massive traffic delays, some motorists reporting sitting in their cars for hours.

At 2 pm Tuesday traffic was actually two abreast on Main St in Southampton Villlage and it was still backed up on every street. Crazy!
