On Tuesday, March 4 at the Suffolk County Legislature’s General Meeting, Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman, the legislature’s deputy presiding officer, presented a proclamation to Eagle Scout and Sag Harbor resident Dana Harvey at the legislature’s March 4 meeting, honoring him for his work and dedication toward the restoration of the St. David African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
As a member of Troop 455, Mr. Harvey received approval from the Sag Harbor Village Historic Preservation and Architectural Review Board to restore the church’s cupola as a part of his Eagle Scout project. Mr. Harvey completed the work by raising over $6,000.
The AME Zion Church on Eastville Avenue was founded in 1840 and believed to be a stop along the Underground Railroad.
The rank of Eagle Scout is the Boy Scouts of America’s highest honor and is achieved by fewer than 3 percent of scouts nationwide. Mr. Harvey is a graduate of Pierson High School and is currently a freshman at Davidson College in North Carolina, where he is majoring in physics.
