Southampton Town Police are investigating the alleged grand larceny of roughly $35,000 from the accounts of the Rainbow Preschool, a private nursery and preschool program located at the Unitarian Universalist Church on the Sag Harbor-Bridgehampton Turnpike in Bridgehampton.
According to a police report filed on February 3, school director and founder Sue Daniels reported the money was taken without permission by a member of the staff, who has since been let go. The theft dates back to January of 2013, according to the incident report, and is a part of an active police investigation.
As of press time, no charges have been filed in the case. As charges have yet to be filed, The Express will not name the alleged suspect in the case.
Details into the embezzlement came a week after the school’s board of directors informed parents that “alleged financial improprieties involving Rainbow Preschool accounts” had been discovered. During a special meeting held with parents last week, Ms. Daniels and board members assured parents that both the nursery and pre-kindergarten programs would not be affected by the situation and that authorities had been contacted.
“Because this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further at this time,” read a board statement. “Please be assured that we are doing everything possible to ensure that this investigation will not impact your children who are always our first priority.”
