Until close to 9 p.m. on Sunday night, fire departments from throughout the region including Sag Harbor, along with Southampton Town Police, Southampton Bay Constables and Suffolk County Police Aviation worked against impending darkness and the advance of inclement weather in an effort to locate a 29-year-old Astoria, Queens man who failed to surface after a Jet-Ski accident on Mecox Bay in Water Mill.
The search continued at daybreak on Monday, but was unsuccessful. Shortly after noon on Tuesday, local residents called police to report a body was discovered on a sand bar in Mecox Bay near Cobb Road. Later that day, Southampton Town Police identified the body as that of Eleuterio Ubisse, 29.
According to police, at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, Southampton Town Police began a search of Mecox Bay after learning Ubisse and a female passenger had been involved in a Jet-Ski accident after losing control of the vessel, both thrown into the water.
Police said neither Ubisse nor the female passenger — who police have not identified — was wearing life vests.
While the female passenger — who was uninjured, according to police — was able to hold onto the Jet Ski until she was picked up by a passing boater and brought to safety, Ubisse went under water and could not be located.
Southampton Town Police and Dive Team worked with the Southampton Bay Constables, Suffolk County Police Aviation and fire departments from Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, Southampton, North Sea, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Westhampton and Eastport in an attempt to locate Ubisse on Sunday night without success.
According to police, at daybreak on Monday, the Southampton Town Police Command Center responded to Flying Point Road with other agencies to continue the search. The Suffolk County Marine Unit deployed its sonar equipment in the effort and two Suffolk County Police Department helicopters were on hand.
The team worked for over 13 hours in an attempt to locate Ubisse. Southampton Town officials recovered the body and said they had removed it into the custody of the Suffolk County Medical Examiners Office to determine whether Ubisse perished as a result of drowning.
According to the Southampton Town Police Department Detective’s Division, until that is determined, the investigation is ongoing.
