Sag Harbor Lady Whalers Fail to Capture County Title

The Pierson-Bridgehampton field hockey team lost, 2-0, to Southampton in the Suffolk County Class C final at Sachem North High School on Monday. The Lady Whalers dominated the first ten minutes, until Southampton flipped the switch and rode two second-half goals to victory.

Southampton had 10 corners in the game to Pierson’s one, and both Lady Mariner goals came off of corners. Pierson failed to put a single shot on goal.

“It was not out best game, to say the least,” head coach Shannon Judge said, “but they are a good team and deserve a lot of credit.”

The loss ended an up-and-down season for the Lady Whalers (10-7) in which they ultimately had to petition Section XI, Suffolk County’s governing body of high school athletics, for a playoff berth after not finishing among the top-six teams in the Division III power-point standings after the regular season.

Southampton (8-7)  moved on to play Friends Academy, the Class C champion from Nassau County, on Tuesday.
