Championship parades down Main Street are becoming routine in late spring Sag Harbor.

The Pierson-Bridgehampton softball team won its second consecutive Suffolk County Class C crown on Thursday, beating Port Jefferson, 6-3, just one day after the school’s baseball team won its second straight county championship as well.

The Lady Whalers, who are also the Long Island champion since there is no other Class C softball school is Nassau County, will play again on Wednesday, June 5 somewhere in Westchester County at a location to be determined later. The winner from that game will advance to the New York State Final Four, where Pierson fell two wins short of a state championship last year.

“You win some and you lose some,” junior shortstop Kasey Gilbride said. “We lost last year but I think it’s our year to win. We’re young, but we’re solid.”

Pierson sored three runs in the first inning on RBI hits from Gilbride, Sam Duchemin and Meg Schiavoni. Alyssa Kneeland scored the team’s fourth run in the second inning.

But Port Jefferson charged back in the bottom of the third and scored three runs off Duchemin to pull within 4-3.

The Lady Whalers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cap the game’s scoring.

“The girls do what they have to do and it’s nice sometimes to just sit back and watch,” head coach Melissa Edwards said, adding that she had no idea who the team would play next, only that it would come from Westchester County.

“We’re playing somewhere next Wednesday,” she said with a laugh before jumping in the back of a pick-up truck with her girls headed for another parade down Main Street.
