An all-too familiar opponent is waiting to face the Pierson-Bridgehampton field hockey team in today’s New York State Class C Championship at Cicero-North Syracuse High School at 12:30 p.m.
The Cazenovia Lady Lakers advanced to face the Lady Whalers after defeating Barker, 1-0, in double overtime in the Class C semifinal round on Saturday. That game followed Pierson’s marathon win over Whitney Point, which took two overtimes and two nail-biting shootout sessions to settle.
It was Cazenovia in 2010 that knocked off Pierson in the state final, sending the Lady Whalers home once again without a state title to its resume. Pierson over the last 20 years has reached the semifinal and final round of the state tournament a number of times, but never reached the ultimate goal of a state championship.
Cazenovia, on the other hand, has won two of the last three Class C titles. After struggling against a Barker team that allowed only five goals this season, junior Ashley Kent scored in sudden-death double overtime to send the Lady Lakers back to the big stage.
Waiting will be a gritty Lady Whalers team that has now won 11 straight games, their last loss coming against Miller Place back on October 8.
Seniors Kasey Gilbride, Katherine Matthers, India Hemby, Kirra McGowin, Emme Luck and Emma Romeo, some of who were on the team that lost to Cazenovia in 2010, will suit up in a Pierson field hockey uniform for the final time today.
