Zeldin Swamps Demos for GOP Nomination

State Senator Lee Zeldin of Shirley handily defeated George Demos in a Republican primary on Tuesday for the right to face Democratic U.S. Representative Tim Bishop in November.

Mr. Zeldin received 62 percent of the vote to Mr. Demos’s 38 percent, according to unofficial results from the Suffolk County Board of Elections. Mr. Zeldin received a total of 9,654 votes and Mr. Demos received 5,880. There were 25 votes cast for unspecified write-in candidates.

Mr. Zeldin, a major in the U.S. Army reserves, unsuccessfully challenged Mr. Bishop in 2008. He was nominated by the Republicans again this year, but Mr. Demos, a former attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission, who lives in Stony Brook, mounted a primary effort, and sought to paint Mr. Zeldin as too liberal.

Mr. Bishop, a former provost at Southampton College, is seeking his seventh term. He was first elected in 2002 when he defeated Republican Felix Grucci.
