Two residents of Ozone Park, N.Y. were arrested in the early morning hours on Friday, June 14 and charged with grand larceny in the second degree, a class C felony, as the result of a six month long investigation mounted by the Sag Harbor Village Police force.

Surajdyal S. Sukraj, 40, and his wife, Nina, 35, both of Ozone Park were arrested at their home by Sag Harbor Village Police Detective Jeffrey Proctor and Officer Robert Drake around 5 a.m. on Friday and charged with the crime. According to Detective Proctor, the two are accused of intentionally stealing 19 bank checks from a Union Street, Sag Harbor residence and cashing them against their joint checking account to the tune of $54,600.

According to Detective Proctor, the checks were cashed between May of 2012 and December of 2012. Police began investigating the case in January, he said.

A key lead in the case, said Detective Proctor, was that Nina H. Sukraj was a former employee of the Union Street resident the checks were taken from. According to Detective Proctor, a housekeeper has testified to allowing Sukraj access to the residence in April of 2012. Detective Proctor added police have “substantial evidence” in terms of video footage from a Chase Bank in Ozone Park showing Surajdyl Sukraj cashing the checks in question.

A class C felony is punishable in New York State by up to 15 years in prison.

Both defendants were arraigned in front of Sag Harbor Village Justice Lisa Rana, who remanded them to Suffolk County Jail in lieu of $7,500 a piece.

I live next to these people. I always suspected that they were up to no good. I hope they are put away for a long time.
