The Pierson-Bridgehampton girls basketball team lost to top-seeded Stony Brook, 40-22, in a Suffolk County Class C semifinal game Wednesday afternoon, bringing the careers of eight Lady Whalers to a tearful conclusion.
Senior Abby Ruiz led Pierson with eight points and Emily Hinz, Rachel Saidman and Sydnee McKie-Senior all scored four points apiece.
“We just had an off night,” Pierson head coach Kevin Barron said. “The shots weren’t falling and they played excellent defense. But we had heart right through the end. They never gave up.”
Stony Brook, which had knocked off Pierson in overtime on February 8 to finish with an 11-1 record in League VIII, will play for a county championship tomorrow, February 15, against either Southold or Port Jefferson.
The Lady Whalers ended their season with an overall record of 9-10 after having finished the league schedule with a 7-5 mark.
Seniors Maricarmen Chaves, Julia Schiavoni, Holly Zappola and Jenna Chase, along with Saidman, Hinz, Ruiz and McKie-Senior, each played their final basketball game in a Pierson uniform.
“These seniors showed the underclassman, showed the JV and showed the middle school what it takes to get to this point,” Barron said. “They really changed the culture of girls basketball at Pierson.”
