Girls Rest Up as Playoffs Near

The Pierson-Bridgehampton girls basketball team has already locked up the League VIII title and soon will begin its quest for a Suffolk County Championship, which the program last won in 2000.

The Lady Whalers will be the top seed in the Class C playoffs, which are tentatively set to begin on Friday, February 14. Other Class C schools have not faired as well this season, with both Stony Brook and Southold currently holding losing records. A .500 record or better is generally required for an automatic berth, although exceptions can be made based on a team’s performance against similarly-sized schools.

As of Wednesday, Southold was 4-1 against Class C schools this season while Stony Brook was 2-3, its only wins coming by forfeit over Ross, the fourth and final Class C school in the county, which dropped to the junior varsity level early in the year.

The Lady Whalers (9-1 in League VIII, 11-6 overall) received one final league win last night, February 5, because of a forfeit by Ross. The team will face Center Moriches, a Class B school, in a scrimmage on February 12.
