Pierson junior Drew Harvey scored a game-winning goal in overtime to lead the East Hampton boys lacrosse team to a 7-6 win over Greenport/Southold/Mattituck on Tuesday. Harvey, who, along with several other Pierson players, competes for East Hampton, scored off an assist from Cortland Heneveld as the Bonackers picked up their first win of the young season.
Harvey finished the game with three goals and two assists, while fellow Pierson player Jack Schleicher had two assists in helping East Hampton improve its Division II record to 1-3.
The Bonackers held a 5-3 lead at halftime but saw their advantage trimmed to just one goal heading into the fourth quarter. Greenport scored a late goal to send the game into overtime, where Harvey wasted little time, netting a goal just one minute into the extra period.
Harvey also led the team with two goals on March 30 in a 13-7 home loss to Riverhead. The visiting Blue Waves jumped out to an early first-quarter lead, scoring on their first five possessions of the game. Head coach Mike Vitulli switched to a zone defense to try and offset the speed of the Riverhead players, and it was effective in holding the Blues Waves to just four second-half goals, but the Bonackers’ offense could not overcome the large deficit from early in the game.
Next up for the Bonackers is a home game today, April 4, against Kings Park at 4:30 p.m. They will host local rival Westhampton on Monday, April 8, also at 4:30 p.m. before going on the road to Comsewogue for a 4:30 p.m. start on April 10.
