The Sag Harbor Men’s Modified Fastpitch Softball League opens up its 50th season with a doubleheader under the lights in Mashashimuet Park on Monday.
The first game, at 7 p.m., matches up a Danny Rowe-led squad with one led by Tim Pilinko. The second game, at 8:45 p.m., brings 2007 and 2008 champion Sag Harbor Liquors, led by Billy Schmitz, in as the visitor against Sean Beyel’s team which finished third in its debut season last year.
The league sports a modified fast-pitch pitching style and 60-foot diamond that’s unique to the East End, high-arc pitching and 65-foot basepaths the norm elsewhere here and up-island. The other 2009 entrants to the league are returning teams managed by Tim Mott, Rich Decker and Charlie Canavan. Each squad plays an 18-game season.
The seven-team league has a full slate this week, games scheduled Monday through Thursday. The four-nights-a-week schedule continues until early August, when the top four teams move into a best-of-three semi-final round; the winners of that round meet for a best-of-five championship series.
This Tuesday’s schedule has Canavan hosting Mott early and Canavan visiting Decker late. Wednesday will have Pilinko at Liquors followed by Beyel at Rowe. Next Thursday, Decker meets Mott before Liquors rolls in against Rowe.
Schedules have been distributed to all the managers by email and will be available this afternoon at Conca D’Oro.
