The sixth annual Minds Over Matter 5K is set to start at 8:30 a.m. on West Water Street in Sag Harbor on Saturday, May 9. The race raises money for brain tumor research in honor of Sag Harbor resident Gwen Kosinski who died of that form of cancer in 2002.
Her friends and family established the GLK Foundation and the Mind Over Matter 5K late that spring and have raised over $400,000 in the last seven years. Grants have been presented to major cancer centers such as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Cedars Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. All of these centers are currently working on a vaccine for brain tumors. In addition, scholarships have been honored to students pursuing studies in cancer related health fields.
More information on the foundation and the 5K event is available online at glkfoundation.org. Online registration for the race is available at glk.kintera.org.
Race organizer Jaime Kosinski has asked that those interested in making a donation, volunteering their time or sponsoring the event email her at email@example.com. She also reminds those with small children that due the growing success of the event, and increased liability, strollers will not be allowed in the official race this year.
