The Pierson boys basketball team remained atop the League VIII standings after posting an easy 75-21 win over the last-place Knox School in Smithtown on Friday. The Whalers were scheduled to play Ross School at home on Tuesday, but the game was postponed until last night, January 15, because of a leak in the roof.
It was the second time that a water leak prevented a game from being played in the high school gym this season, with the girls team having faced Sayville on December 23 at the middle school when a leak made the game unplayable in the high school gym. Athletic Director Todd Gulluscio on Wednesday said a new roof over the gym is part of the capital project that was approved by voters in the spring, and that it will be installed later this year.
Forrest Loesch led all scorers against Knox with 24 points as the Whalers cruised to a 39-9 halftime lead. Ten different players got their names in the scoring column, including Robbie Evjen, who had 12 points, and Garrett Potter, who had 10.
Going into last night’s game against Ross, Pierson held a 6-1 league record and was 6-3 overall. A home game against rival Bridgehampton is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., with a road trip to Smithtown Christian following on Tuesday, January 21 at Smithtown Christian.
The Pierson-Bridgehampton Lady Whalers also had games cancelled over the last week, with a non-league contest against Wyandanch moved to February 3. The team’s scheduled meeting with the Ross School this week was ruled a forfeit in favor of Pierson, which is now 5-1 and in first place in League VIII, since the Lady Cosmos decided to play the rest of the season at the junior varsity level.
Following the long layoff, the Lady Whalers will return to action with a road game at Port Jefferson on Saturday at 10 a.m. They will also play East Hampton in a non-league game on Wednesday, January 22 at 6:15 p.m.
