Kasey Gilbride scored 16 points and had seven steals to lead the Pierson-Bridgehampton girls basketball team to a 46-30 win over Mercy on Monday night, improving the Lady Whalers to 4-1 atop the League VIII standings.

Sophomore Erica Selyukova had seven points and led the way on the glass with 13 rebounds. Senior captain Eilis Sheil added eight points while freshman Isabel Peters had seven.

Pierson (5-6 overall) was coming off a series of non-league losses against larger schools before getting back in the winning column on Monday. The Lady Whalers lost, 43-38, to Miller Place in the first round of the Hampton Bays Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament on December 27, and then lost the consolation game a day later, 43-21, to Rocky Point.

A non-league game against East Hampton was originally scheduled for January 3 but was cancelled due to weather. The Lady Whalers, who played at Wyandanch last night, January 8, after press time, were also scheduled to play the Ross School this coming Tuesday, but the Lady Cosmos will play only a junior varsity schedule this season and will therefore forfeit all varsity games. As a result, Pierson’s next game will not be until Saturday, January 18 at Port Jefferson at 10 a.m.
