Pierson Girls Cross County Falls Short in Quest for Title

The Pierson girls cross country team lost, 26-38, to Stony Brook in the Suffolk County Class D Championship at Sunken Meadow State Park on Saturday. While Stony Brook was the favorite to win the race, the result was somewhat disappointing for the Lady Whalers, who lost to the Lady Bears by just a single point earlier this season.

“It wasn’t as close as I thought it would be,” head coach Jim Kinnier said. “They placed four runners in the top seven. Sometimes you have to take your hat off, shake the other team’s hand and congratulate them, which the Pierson girls did right after the race.”

Three girls qualified to run for Suffolk County in the New York State meet at Queensbury High School on Saturday, November 9. Hannah Jungk (5th place, 23:58), Maya Buckner (6th place, 23:59) and Elena Skerys (8th place, 24:37) will represent Pierson and Suffolk in the state meet as a result of their finishes at Sunken Meadow.

The Pierson boys cross county team also competed on Saturday and Tiger Britt finished 5th overall with a time of 19:57 to earn his place in the state meet as well.
