The fall sports season has become a busy one at Pierson High School, where seven teams now compete at the varsity level. Postseason athletic awards were announced this week and three of those teams were honored with New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar Athlete Team Awards for having total averages of 90-percent or higher.

The girls soccer team posted a total average of 94.55-percent while the field hockey (93.13-percent) and girls volleyball (91.85-percent) teams also posted high averages to earn the prestigious award.

Junior field hockey star Kasey Gilbride was the most decorated individual athlete, earning All-State and All-County honors. Katherine Matthers earned honorable mention All-County status, while Emma Romeo and Ana Sherwood were named All League. Rachel Saidman, the only senior on the team, was named to the All Tournament team after the Lady Whalers played for the Suffolk County Class C title, losing to rival Southampton in the final.

In girls’ varsity soccer, junior goalie Julia Schiavoni earned All County status while senior forward Sophie Gianis was named All Conference and Sara Hartman All League.  Lindsay Cox was one of just 10 players to be named to the All County Academic team, while Hartman, Sarah Arbia and Bridgehampton’s Vanessa Cruz earned All League academic honors.

May Evjen was the lone player from the girls volleyball team to be named All League while Elena Skerys and Maya Bucker were named to the All League girls cross country team.

Members of the boys soccer team, which reached the postseason before being eliminated by eventual state champion Port Jefferson, were also honored with Christian Bautista and Oliver Betts being named All Conference and Alex Liro and Jack Fitzpatrick All League. Mark Schimmer was named JV Coach of the year in League VIII.

From the boys’ golf team, Gabe Denon, Dillon Decker and Jack Bori were named All League following Pierson’s 8-2 season in which it lost to only undefeated Southampton.
