Pierson High School was represented at Saturday’s acclaimed Sprig Gardner wrestling tournament, held annually at East Hampton High School, with senior Kevin Heine wrestling at 182 pounds. Heine won his first match, pinning Chris Chomicki of Westhampton Beach in 1 minute and 13 seconds.
Heine went on to lose, 4-0, to top-seeded Tal Granot from Hauppauge and then lost a tough battle to Sebastian Antonio from Westhampton by a score of 15-13.
Westhampton, a perennial wrestling powerhouse, won the overall team title with 243 ½ points while East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton finished seventh out of nine teams with 82 points.
Pierson senior Dana Harvey and junior Mike Knab, a newcomer to the sport, will also compete for the Bonackers this season, but did not participate in Saturday’s tournament. Head coach Steve Tsperkas on Monday said he expects both will compete at the varsity level, Harvey at 170 pounds and Knab at 220, in upcoming individual tournaments and when the League VI dual-meet schedule begins at Mt. Sinai on January 4.

The Ross School boys basketball team fell to 0-4 in non-league play this week with losses to Brentwood on December 7 and Smithtown East on December 8. Ross will compete in League VIII and as a Class D school this season along with Bridgehampton, Shelter Island and Smithtown Christian. Roosevelt Odidi, who averaged 23 points per game in the two losses last week, leads the team.
