Pierson Swimmers Contribute to Strong Season

The East Hampton boys swimming team, which includes swimmers from Pierson Middle High School and The Bridgehampton School, continued its impressive season with a 60-41 win at West Islip on Thursday, January 24 and a 93-82 win over Deer Park on Tuesday. The Bonackers improved to 5-1 in League II, good for second place behind only Sayville/Bayport, which is undefeated at 5-0.

The four wins for East Hampton are a program record, according to head coach Craig Brierley.

“I had some pretty high expectations for these guys,” Brierley said this week. “Knowing the make up of what we had last year, I really wanted to see them take that next step for continued success. We have 32 athletes, which is great. It gives us a lot of flexibility on the team and all the boys are swimming really well.”

Of the 32 swimmers, juniors Kyle Sturmann, Joe Gengarelly and Baxter Parcher-Charles are from Pierson.

“Joe has become one of the top breast stokers on the team and Kyle is consistently one of the better butterflyers,” Brierley said. “And Baxter contributes as well in the breaststroke and freestyle.”

Today, Thursday, January 31, is the team’s final home meet of the season against North Babylon at 4:30 p.m. The League II Championship will be held at Hauppauge High School on February 8 at 4:30 p.m., with the Section XI Championship following on February 16 at Suffolk County Community College.

Killer Bees Cruise Against Smithtown Christian

The Bridgehampton boys basketball team picked up a crucial win on Tuesday, January 29, knocking off Smithtown Christian, 75-44, to improve to 5-5 in League VIII play. A .500 record is required to automatically qualify for the postseason.

Freshman point guard Tylik Furman scored a career-high 29 points in Tuesday’s win while Jason Hopson, with 19 points, and Josh Lamison, with 16, also had strong games for the Killer Bees. The win over Smithtown Christian, a fellow Class D School, set up a showdown for tomorrow, Friday, February 1, at Shelter Island, which is considered the Killer Bees’ strongest competition this year for a Suffolk County Class D title. A home game against Pierson on Tuesday, February 5 at 6 p.m. will be followed by the final regular-season game of the season against the Ross School on Friday, February 8.
