Vila Strikes out 17 in Win
Lefty ace Colman Vila pitched another gem for the Pierson-Bridgehampton baseball team on Monday, striking out 17 in a 3-1 win over visiting Smithtown Christian as the Whalers improved their record to a perfect 9-0 in League IX play.
Vila improved to 4-0 after allowing just two hits and a walk in seven innings of work.
Jake Bennett led Pierson at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a RBI and Smithtown Christian, which is in second place in the league, helped the Whalers with five defensive errors.
Earlier in the week, Pierson wrapped up a three-game sweep of Southold with a 14-9 home win on April 10 followed by a 12-0 win at Southold the following day. Forrest Loesch and Nick Kruel combined to allow just five hits in the final game, with Loesch striking out six and Kruel striking out four in two innings of relief.
Aaron Schiavoni had two hits and four RBI in the win while Loesch added three RBI to help himself on the mound.
Tim Markowski picked up the win in the second game against Southold, despite a tough stretch in which the Settlers scored five runs in the third inning. Schiavoni had another solid day at the plate, picking up three RBI with a double and a triple.
Pierson will play Game 2 of its series with Smithtown Christian at home today, April 18, at 4:30 p.m. Game 3 will be at Smithtown Christian the following day at 4:30 p.m.
Softball Dominant in Three Victories
The Pierson-Bridgehampton softball team dominated two League VIII opponents this week, shutting out Southold/Greenport, 14-0, on the road on April 10 before beating McGann-Mercy, 11-3, at home on Saturday in a game that was re-scheduled because of rain. Pitcher Sam Duchemin picked up wins in both games and Kasey Gilbride hit her third homer of the season while going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI in the win over Mercy.
The Lady Whalers improved their overall record to 5-1 with a 6-3 non-league win over Mattituck on Tuesday. Duchemin again pitched well to pick up the win and Gilbride had two more hits to lead Pierson at the plate.
In League VIII play, Pierson trails only Babylon, which is undefeated so far in its first year in the league. The Lady Whalers are scheduled to travel to Center Moriches for another League VII crossover game tomorrow, April 19, at 4:30 p.m. The team’s next home game will be Tuesday, April 23 against local rival Southampton at 4:30 p.m.
