Sports Wrap 4/26/12

Pierson Basketball

The Pierson Whalers varsity basketball team was further honored by Section XI for its stellar 2011-2012 season. The Whalers finished with a regular season record of 10-4, eventually reaching the Long Island Class C championship game before falling to East Rockaway.  Sophomores Joey Butts and Ian Barrett were both named to the All-League team, while junior Pat Sloane was given the Unsung Hero Award.


Pierson Softball

The Lady Whalers Softball team dropped its second game of the season this week to the visiting Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms. The Phantoms jumped on the Lady Whalers early, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first, and steadily expanding on that lead as the game progressed. The Whalers responded in the bottom of the same inning, when -— with runners on second and third — Melanie Stafford hit a 2-RBI single to a gap in right field. Kasey Gilbride added a 2 outs, solo home run of her own in the bottom of the seventh. In the end, the Phantoms proved too much, winning 10-4.Despite the loss, the Whalers are still in charge of their season, currently holding a record of 5-2. The Lady Whalers next play on Monday, April 30 at 4:30 p.m. when they travel to Mount Sinai.


Ross Tennis

Ross Cosmos Tennis is back to its winning ways this week after dropping yet another non-league match last week. Ross first beat Eastport/South Manor (2-5) at home in a 6-1 decision on Wednesday, April 18. The team then traveled to take on the combined East Hampton/Bridgehampton/Pierson team (3-5) on Monday, April 23, this time 5-2.
