Lady Whalers To Play Port Jeff for Suffolk Title

The Pierson-Bridgehampton softball team will play Port Jefferson for the Suffolk County Class C championship in a best-of-three series starting at home tomorrow, May 24 at 2 p.m. Game 2 will be on Tuesday, May 28 at Port Jefferson at 4 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary, would be back in Sag Harbor on Wednesday, May 29 at 4 p.m.

The Lady Whalers are the defending Suffolk and Long Island Class C Champions and finished the regular season with a 10-6 record, good for second place in League VIII.

Normally a .500 record is required for postseason play, but Port Jefferson had their appeal approved by Section XI, Suffolk County’s governing body of athletics, after posting a 5-11 record during the regular season.

Pierson beat Port Jefferson in their two meetings this year.

McGowin Leads Tigers to Championship

Pierson graduate Kyle McGowin has led the Savannah State University baseball team to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship and a berth in the upcoming National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I tournament. The 64-team bracket will be announced on Monday, May 27.

On May 19, McGowin (12-1) pitched 10 shutout innings and struck out 11 while allowing just seven hits and two walks in a 1-0 win over Bethune-Cookman University that clinched the MEAC title. McGowin’s lone blemish of the year came against the same school back on May 5.

McGowin was named the MEAC Pitcher of the Year this season and is currently among 22 finalists for a prestigious national Pitcher of the Year award sponsored by Diamond Sports. That award will be presented on June 29.
