Lady Whalers Basketball: Lady Settlers dominate in 39-20 loss

By Andrew Rudansky

The Pierson/Bridgehampton Lady Whalers girls’ varsity basketball team was in a great position to pull off an upset over the first place Southold Lady Porters on Thursday, January 19. They were riding a three-game winning streak, averaging 41.3 points per game in that stretch, had home court advantage and were receiving key contributions from across the entire roster.

The Lady Porters, still undefeated in League VIII play, had other ideas and handed Pierson a disappointing 20-39 loss in the contest.

“We played awesome defense, we just couldn’t get the ball in the net,” said Pierson Head Coach Dennis Case about Thursday’s loss.

The Lady Whalers looked unprepared in the first half of the game, getting outrebounded on both ends of the court and outrun in the open floor.

Sophomore Bridget Canavan scored all 6 of the Lady Whalers’ points in the first two quarters. Canavan led her team with 11 points on the night.

Senior Sariah Cafiero finished the night with 5 points, while juniors Emily Hinz and Mariecarmen Chavez each finished with 2.

The relatively small size of the Lady Whalers, a weakness that has limited the team all season, was glaring in the defeat. The much taller Porters were able to dominate in the post, snatching uncontested offensive rebounds enabling for second and third shots.

“We don’t have a lot of height at all,” said Case, “they had three girls that were taller than anybody on our team.”

By the third quarter, the Lady Porters had shut the door, taking a 26-10 lead and showed no signs of slowing down. The Lady Whalers were able to post 10 points in the final quarter, thanks to a 3-point shot from Cafiero, but it was all too little, too late.

The loss puts Pierson/Bridgehampton in third place with a 4-2 League VIII record, however the Lady Whalers are only 2 wins away to securing a .500 season and a ticket to the Class-C playoffs.

A trip to the playoffs this year would be the seventh straight for the Lady Whalers.

The Port Jefferson Lady Royals (3-3) will host the Lady Whalers today, January 26 at 4:30 p.m.

The Lady Whalers will face a big challenge next week, on Tuesday, January 31at 6:15 p.m. when the Shelter Island Lady Indians (5-1) travel across the ferry to challenge the Pierson/Bridgehampton squad.
