Waiting Out the Cold

Last week was right out of the Arctic handbook. Lows of single digits and highs under 20 degrees were the norm. A few days of that and the freshwater ponds were skatable and ice formed on salt water. As I write this, the temps have moderated and it is hard to believe that 32 degrees feels like a heat wave! Yes it is almost February and we have been spoiled. There were no nature weekend activities except huddling around the fire and reading a book. This week will approach 50 degrees and then it is back to seasonal temperatures. I am hoping for some open water to get back on the clamming flats.

There was more good news from the cod grounds last week. If you were tough enough to take the weather, most anglers were awarded with good cod catches. Several anglers caught their limits with not too much trouble from the doggies. A few pollock, ling and seabass were caught. In the past, February and March are the best months.

We all know it is Super Bowl weekend and with that comes the East Meadow Fishing Flea Market this Sunday, February 3. It is located at Temple Emanuel, 123 Merrick Avenue in East Meadow. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. which will get you home in time for the big game.
