Hurricane Bill Closes Southampton Town Beaches

Tags: , ,

Southampton Town Police announced today that due to heavy surf and dangerous rip current conditions caused by Hurricane Bill, swimming at all town beaches is prohibited until further notice. Southampton Town Parks and Recreation further advised that the beaches are open to sunbathers, however, town lifeguards will be directing beachgoers not to enter the water and day passes will not be issued.
According to the National Weather Service, the high surf and coastal flooding is likely to continue through this weekend. A persistent southeasterly flow combined with swells associated with the passage of Hurricane Bill will produce widespread minor coastal flooding along the ocean shores across New York City and Long Island. In addition, seas of 12 to 17 feet over the open ocean waters will result in surf heights of 8 to 12 feet at ocean beaches. This could lead to severe beach erosion as well as a high risk of rip currents.
