Lawrence Wade Williams, Jr.
Lawrence Wade “Uncle Larry” Williams, Jr., was born in Atlantic City, N.J., to Lawrence and Alma Williams on January 13, 1929. He was educated in the Atlantic City Public School System and in 1950 joined the U.S. Army serving tours in Fort Hancock, Camp Edwards and Cape Cod. That same year Mr. Williams met and married Thelma Jones and together they had three sons: Rev. Guy Lawrence Williams of Springfield, Ill., Mark Steven Williams (deceased) and Lawrence Wade Williams III, of Riverdale, N.Y.
He and his family lived in St. Albans, Queens, for thirty-three years while he enjoyed a successful sales career with General Motors. He retired in 1990.
Many joyous times were spent at their summer home in Sag Harbor, said the family, and Mr. Williams especially enjoyed golfing, annual Labor Day beach parties and get-togethers with extended family and friends. In addition, he worshiped at the East End Church of Christ in East Hampton and was an active member of the Sag Harbor Hills Association. In recent years, Mr. and Mrs. Williams divided their time between Sag Harbor and their residence in Daytona Beach, Fla.
In addition to his wife of 59 years and two sons, he is survived by three daughters-in-law, Vivian, Tisha and Virginia; six grandchildren, Quanisha, Paris, Tasha, Toni, Samantha and Lawrence; three great-grandchildren Julian, Kylie and James; one sister, Alma Joyce Earley; and nieces and nephews Michael and Vernia Williams, Margie Williams, Gayle and Joe Graves, Linda and Fritz Eugene, Robert and Linda Williams, Carol Brown, Melvin Brown, Larry Hudson and a host of great nieces and nephews, extended family and cherished friends.
“We would be remiss if we did not mention the love that Uncle Larry had for his family,” said relatives. “Whether you knew him as Sonny, Papa, Big Larry, or Dad, you were touched by his warmth, affection and gentle spirit.”
Visiting hours were held on Wednesday at Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, October 1, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
