Players from the Pierson-Bridgehampton field hockey team we’re “jumping for joy” Friday morning, according to their coach, Shannon Judge, after word came down from the Section XI Seeding Committee that the Lady Whalers had earned a playoff exemption to face Southampton in The Suffolk County Class C Championship game on November 6.
Judge said the decision seemed “very easy” for the committee based on the team’s accomplishments this season. Pierson split the regular-season series with Southampton one game apiece and also beat Riverhead, which finished the year ranked ahead of PIerson in the power-point standings. The Lady Whalers were 8-4 in Division III games and were 4-1 against fellow Class C schools.
“You have to prove you’re a top level Class C school, and we did that this year,” Judge said. “I think we deserved it.”
The county championship game will be played at Ward Melville High School on Tuesday, November 6 at 7 p.m. And, yes, that is election night.
“I guess I’ll have to vote early,” Judge said.
