Over the last two League VIII boys soccer seasons only two things have slowed down the Pierson Whalers: the Southold Settlers and a bolt of lightening.

One the Whalers will face next Saturday for the second consecutive year for the Suffolk County Class C Championship at Diamond in the Pines Park in Coram. The other? Well, that’s in the hands of a higher power.

The Pierson girls cross country team defeated both Shelter Island and Ross at Mashashimuet Park on Tuesday to finish their League VIII season with a perfect 6-0 record.

Arnold Palmer once called the sport of golf both rewarding and maddening at the same time, words that might have resonated in the minds of the Pierson golf team late Tuesday afternoon.

After notching one of the biggest wins in program history—a 7-2 pounding of the previously unbeaten Southampton Mariners on their own home course—Pierson suffered one of the more painful defeats in recent memory, a 6.5-2.5 loss to East Hampton that might cost the program its first league title in 51 years.

Kasey Gilbride, one of the greatest Pierson field hockey players of all time, who, for the moment, hold’s the school’s single-season scoring record with 28 goals, is starting to find her groove at the collegiate level down south in Richmond, Virginia.
